Finland is a country in Northern Europe, bordered by Sweden, Norway, and Russia, with access to the Baltic Sea. The capital, Helsinki, together with Espoo and Vantaa, forms a metropolitan area. The country is renowned for its countless lakes—around 55,000—and vast forests, which cover 69% of its territory. The climate is temperate, featuring cold winters and mild summers. The best time to visit is during the summer, when the days are long and warm. Finland gained independence in 1917 and is a member of several international organizations, including the EU and NATO.
